About Shimla

Located at the foothills of Himalaya Shimla was the summer capital of British India. This pristine hill station is today the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla got its name from Devi Shyamala who is considered to be one of the incarnations of Hindu deity Kali.

Shimla is one of the exquisite hill stations of Northern India. Queen of hills as it is popularly called is sprawled over a 12km ridge. Pines and Deodars are strewn all over Shimla, a splendid views of Mighty Himalayas is presented by these trails. This spectacular hillstation surrounded by seven hills is blessed with many places of tourist interest.

Place of Religious Significance


St. Michaels's Cathedral and Christ Church : Built over a period which is more than a decade Christ Church is the 2nd oldest Church of North India. The main attraction of the Church is the stained glass windows.

Sankat Mochan and Jakhoo Temple : Jakhoo Temple is located on the hilltop which is the highest point of Shimla (8048 kms above sea level). Both these temples are dedicated to Lord Hanuman and present a spectacular view of Shimla.

Kalibari and Tara Devi : The temple of Shyamala Devi called Kalibari and that of Tara Devi are the other places of religious importance in the area.

Places of Architectural and Scenic Beauty


Shimla is famous for its seven hills viz. Jakhoo Hills, Bantony, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill, Observatory Hill, Elysium Hill and Invererarm Hill.

Viceregal Lodge and Botanical Garden : The erstwhile residence of the Viceroy of British India is called the Viceregal Lodge. The botanical Garden is located at a distance of 2 km from the lodge.

Prospect Hill : The temple of Kamana devi is the prime attraction of this hill.

Glenn : Located in the dense forests at a distance of 4 kms from the Ridge is the Glen forest which is the favorite destination for Picnickers because of the fresh water stream flowing through it.

Annandale : It has got an open ground which is a rare sight in the hills and the picturesque location makes it a favorite picnic spot.

Elysium : Elysium hills in Shimla have the famous Auckland house and Longwood.
